This Privacy Policy explains how MyChessPlace collects, uses, stores, and protects personal data when you use our website, our courses and downloadable course files, and the other chess training features we make available from time to time.

MyChessPlace is operated by ONLINECHESSCOURSES S.R.L., a company registered in Romania.

1. Who is responsible for your data

ONLINECHESSCOURSES S.R.L. is the data controller for MyChessPlace.

When purchases are enabled on MyChessPlace, they will be sold and processed by a third-party payment provider acting as our merchant of record. That provider is identified at checkout and acts as an independent data controller for payment, billing, tax, and fraud-prevention data it collects.

2. Data we collect

Account information. Email address, username or display name, password authentication data stored in secure hashed form, and login/session information.

Chess activity. Course progress, quiz answers and scores, uploaded PGNs and games, and other chess-related activity. These features currently include game review and practice against bots; the specific features we offer may change over time.

Technical information. IP address, browser and device information, security and network-request information, and server logs.

Purchase information. The product purchased, purchase and payment status, refund status, transaction identifiers, checkout email address, tax country, and billing details where applicable. We never receive or store full card details.

Communication information. Emails or messages you send us, support requests, newsletter preferences, and related communication history.

3. How we use your data

We use personal data to create and manage accounts, provide course access and downloadable files, save progress, process uploaded PGNs/games, operate platform features, process purchases/refunds, provide support, maintain security, send service messages, send marketing where permitted, and comply with legal obligations.

4. Legal bases for processing

We rely on performance of a contract, legitimate interests, consent where required, and legal obligations. Legitimate interests include maintaining security, preventing abuse, fixing bugs, operating ordinary server logs, and improving the platform in ways that do not override your rights.

5. Uploaded PGNs and games

Uploaded PGNs and games are stored in our database (MongoDB Atlas) and are private by default unless we clearly offer a sharing/public feature and you choose to use it.

We do not sell uploaded PGNs or games.

6. Features that process your chess data

MyChessPlace uses its own bot and game-review services to process chess positions or games and the selected playing level.

For opening information, the platform may send the current chess position in FEN format to the Lichess Opening Explorer. No MyChessPlace account identifier is intentionally included with that request.

We may add, change, replace, suspend, or discontinue platform features over time, including bots, game review, quizzes, analysis tools, or other training features. If we begin sending account-linked chess data to a new external provider, we will update this Privacy Policy.

7. Payments, refunds, and downloadable content

When checkout is enabled, it will be operated by a third-party payment provider acting as the merchant of record. The provider handles payment processing, applicable sales tax or VAT, and issues your invoice or receipt.

Refund requests may be made to MyChessPlace or directly through the merchant of record's buyer-support channels where available. Where approved under our Refund Policy or required by law, refunds are processed through the payment provider or merchant of record.

Where a refund is issued, online access is removed. Downloaded files remain technically on your device, but your licence to use those files ends when the refund is issued and you must delete your copies.

8. Analytics

We do not currently use analytics, advertising, or session replay tools on MyChessPlace.

We may use ordinary server, security, and error logs where necessary to operate, secure, debug, and protect the platform.

9. Cookies and browser storage

MyChessPlace uses cookies and browser storage for authentication, security, preferences, and user-requested features. See our Cookie Policy for the current names, purposes, and durations.

10. Providers and services we use

Providers may include DigitalOcean, MongoDB Atlas, Cloudflare, Google reCAPTCHA, Postmark, Vimeo, Google Fonts, Font Awesome, jsDelivr, cdnjs, Lichess Opening Explorer, lichess1.org, images.chesscomfiles.com, the payment provider identified in the purchase flow, Kit (formerly ConvertKit), and Google Workspace.

DeepL may be used by administrators to translate course content. Our current implementation is for administrator-supplied course content rather than user account or game data.

We do not sell your personal data.

11. International transfers

Some providers may process data outside the EEA. Where this happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as adequacy decisions, data processing agreements, and standard contractual clauses.

12. Business transfers and changes of operator

If MyChessPlace, or substantially all of the business or assets connected with MyChessPlace, is sold, transferred, reorganised, merged, assigned, or moved to another operator or service provider, personal data associated with the platform may be transferred as part of that transaction where permitted by law.

We will take reasonable steps to ensure that any successor processes personal data consistently with applicable data-protection law and will notify users where required.

13. Data retention

  • Account and chess activity data is generally kept while your account is active.
  • Uploaded PGNs and games are generally kept while your account is active, or until you delete them where deletion tools are available.
  • Payment, tax, accounting, refund, and legal records may be retained after account deletion for the period required by applicable law.
  • Technical logs are kept for a limited period unless needed for security, debugging, fraud prevention, dispute handling, or legal reasons.

You may request deletion of your account by contacting [email protected]. Account deletion does not require us to erase records that must be retained for legal, tax, accounting, fraud-prevention, or dispute-resolution obligations.

14. Your rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to processing, request portability, withdraw consent, and complain to a data-protection authority.

For Romania, the supervisory authority is the ANSPDCP.

15. Automated decision-making

MyChessPlace does not use automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects for users.

16. Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures including encrypted connections, hashed password storage, and access controls. No online service can guarantee perfect security.

17. Children and minors

MyChessPlace is intended for users aged 16 and above. Purchases may only be made by a person aged 18 or over, or by a parent or legal guardian on a minor's behalf.

18. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. For material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date and may notify users by email, through the platform, or by another reasonable method.
